As a mother of a young Black boy, I wanted to capture the depth of unconditional love that exists between a mother and her son. This piece was inspired by a photograph of Tanya and her son Tyeece Lovett, whose bond beautifully reflects the tenderness, strength, and joy inherent in this unique relationship. It’s a celebration of love, protection, and the quiet moments that shape a lifetime. 

During my interview with Tanya Lovett, her pain was still palpable. She spoke softly but powerfully about how she continues to mourn her son, Tyeese, every single day. Tanya and her family had built a happy life in Delaware, filled with love and peace—until tragedy struck in 2022. That night, Tyeece went to see a friend off to prom and was senselessly shot seven times in the back. A 15-year-old was charged with his death, and now, at 18, the accused is finally on trial. Tanya’s story is one of unimaginable loss, but also of courage and a mother’s enduring love that refuses to fade.
